Sofitel has announced the transformation of Sofitel Rio de Janeiro Ipanema into the brand’s first flagship hotel in Brazil, with reopening scheduled for the end of 2026. The redevelopment will reposition the beachfront property as a contemporary expression of the brand’s luxury hospitality approach, comprising 172 rooms and suites.

The project reflects a broader strategic focus on culturally distinctive destinations within the group’s luxury portfolio. Located on Ipanema Beach, the hotel will be reimagined to integrate more closely with its coastal setting while introducing an updated design and guest experience aligned with Sofitel’s current positioning. Scheduled to open at the end of 2026, the transformed hotel will embody French Zest and Carioca Soul, marking a new chapter for the brand.

“This flagship transformation reflects Sofitel’s long-term commitment to Brazil and to the “Cidade Maravilhosa” (Marvelous City), as Rio de Janeiro is known worldwide, a city whose cultural vitality and seaside elegance naturally resonate with the brand’s DNA. Reimagined under new ownership and guided by an ambitious architectural and design vision, Sofitel Rio de Janeiro Ipanema will elevate the guest experience through a refined dialogue between French Zest and the vibrant Carioca Soul. More than an evolution, the project marks a strategic milestone for Sofitel in Latin America – setting a new benchmark for the brand in the region and reaffirming its confidence in destinations with strong cultural identity and global appeal.”

Design Concept And Architectural Vision

The redesign is led by architect Patricia Anastassiadis, who presents a contemporary interpretation of “quiet luxury”, expressed through materiality, spatial flow and a connection to place. The scheme draws on both French and Brazilian influences, positioning the hotel as a convergence of the French Riviera’s formal elegance and Rio de Janeiro’s coastal character.

The building’s elevated position on Ipanema Beach will be leveraged through panoramic views across the shoreline, sunset and Dois Irmãos hills. The property will also be the tallest building in the immediate area, offering 360-degree views across the city and ocean.

“Sofitel Rio de Janeiro Ipanema marks the meeting point between a sophisticated atmosphere and freedom and the French gaze that falls in love with the Carioca soul. The project embodies lightness and warmth, creating common ground between Brazilian movement and French elegance.”

Brazilian Craft And Cultural Integration

Interiors will incorporate Brazilian design and craftsmanship, with furniture by Oscar Niemeyer, Sergio Rodrigues and Zanini de Zanine, alongside sculptural works by Hugo França. Additional artistic contributions include works by Artur Lescher, Heloisa Crocco and Teodoro Dias, as well as Brazilian photography.

Material choices reference the surrounding environment, with textures and tones inspired by sand, sea and sky. Glass façades across the lower floors will create visual permeability and strengthen the building’s relationship with the street, supported by dual entrances on Avenida Vieira Souto and Rua Maria Quitéria.

Guest Experience And Facilities

The hotel’s programme will include a spa, fitness centre and rooftop infinity pool, alongside Club Millésime, Sofitel’s executive lounge, located on the 21st floor. Meeting and events facilities will occupy the third floor, developed under the Meeting Residence concept.

Food And Beverage Offer

Food and beverage will form a central component of the offer. A signature restaurant led by a Michelin-starred chef will occupy the 22nd floor, complemented by a rooftop bar, an all-day dining restaurant and a ground-floor beachfront venue. A Beach Club will further extend the hotel’s leisure and social offering.

Netto Moreira, General Manager of Accor’s luxury cluster in Rio de Janeiro, said:

“Hospitality is an art that unites cultures. The Carioca welcomes with joy, warmth, and spontaneity, while the French bring elegance, refinement, and savoir-faire. Sofitel Rio de Janeiro Ipanema was transformed to meet the expectations of an increasingly discerning clientele, offering an inspirational and personalized experience. This flagship transformation takes place at a very positive moment for Accor’s luxury portfolio in Rio de Janeiro, reinforcing our commitment to excellence and cultural authenticity,”
