During a quick business trip to London, I stayed at Zedwell Piccadilly Circus. It’s a no-frills stay, but in all the right ways: clean, central, affordable, and well-put-together. If you’re travelling solo or just need a place to rest your head, it does the job without overcomplicating things.

Right in the centre of everything

Zedwell is located inside the historic London Pavilion, part of the old Trocadero building, which has been cleverly transformed into what is now the world’s largest capsule hotel. The location could not be better, just steps from Piccadilly Circus Underground station, and close to Leicester Square, Soho, Chinatown and Regent Street. You’re right in the heart of the West End, with everything from restaurants and bars to theatres and shops within easy walking distance.

If you’ve got plans that run late or you know you’ll miss the last train, this is the kind of place you’ll be glad you booked. It’s ideal for short, no-hassle stays when you just need a reliable place to crash.

The cocoon setup

Zedwell doesn’t have traditional hotel rooms. Instead, it offers “cocoons” – compact, enclosed sleep spaces that are designed purely for rest. While they’re small, they don’t feel claustrophobic. There’s enough room to sit up, stretch your legs, store a cabin-sized suitcase and plug in your phone.

The design of this space is clean and calming. Each cocoon is fitted with oak panelling, a Hypnos mattress, filtered air, USB ports, and soft ambient lighting. Despite being in one of London’s busiest corners, the impressive soundproofing ensured a reasonably quiet environment. I barely heard any external noise, even with several neighbours sleeping nearby.

If you’re accustomed to a fully furnished hotel room with armchairs and wardrobes, this place is definitely more stripped-back. It’s designed with sleep in mind, rather than lounging, which is part of its appeal for travellers seeking a simple, comfortable, and affordable accommodation.

Easy check-in

Check-in is completely self-service and refreshingly easy. Upon arrival, simply tap your booking code onto a tablet in the lobby and code your own key card. The process took less than two minutes. Staff are on hand if you need assistance, but the system works smoothly.

Check-in opens from 3 pm, and checkout is by 10 am.

Downstairs, vending machines offer a variety of snacks, drinks, and travel essentials, including earplugs, toothbrushes, and chargers, providing everything you need for a short stay.

Great value for central London

Central London offers a genuinely hard-to-beat price point. Rates start from around £30 per night, providing a private, soundproofed space to sleep in a location where most hotels charge significantly more.

While it may not be luxury, Zedwell is designed to meet the needs of those seeking a clean, comfortable base close to everything, without breaking the bank.

A quiet, varied guest mix

While I was there, I saw a mix of solo travellers, tourists, and business guests. Everyone seemed to be doing their own thing, checking in, heading out, sleeping, and the atmosphere stayed relaxed. This isn’t a social hostel, and there’s no bar or shared lounge, but if you value peace and quiet, that’s a real plus.

The world’s largest capsule hotel

Zedwell Piccadilly Circus has around 1,000 cocoons spread across five floors, making it the largest capsule-style hotel anywhere in the world. Despite that scale, it never felt busy or overwhelming.

Five quick tips if you’re planning a stay

  1. Bring a small padlock if you want to secure personal items inside your cocoon – can also be purchased at the hotel
  2. Bring a charger – Without a TV you will be using your phone for entertainment – don’t run out of juice.
  3. Girl power – Female-only areas are available.
  4. Pack light – there’s enough room for basics, but larger luggage will be a squeeze
  5. Make time to explore the area – you’re a short walk from London’s best food, nightlife and entertainment

Final thoughts

Zedwell isn’t about luxury or extras, it’s about giving you a clean, central, comfortable and cheap place to stay right where you need to be. The cocoon setup may not be for everyone, but if you’re travelling light or only in town for a night, it really works. I didn’t need a minibar or a sitting area, I just needed a quiet, comfortable place to sleep, and that’s exactly what I got.
