The Met Hotel Leeds Unveils Historic Refurbishment
The Grade II listed Met Hotel Leeds has completed a major refurbishment, combining restored architectural features with new interiors, a dining concept and upgraded event facilities.
The Met Hotel Leeds has completed a major refurbishment, marking a new phase for one of the city’s longstanding hospitality landmarks.
Originally opened in 1899, the Grade II listed building has undergone a comprehensive programme of restoration and redesign, retaining its historic character while introducing updated interiors and amenities aligned with contemporary hospitality expectations.
Designed by Chorley & Connon, with interiors by Matthews Mee, the building’s defining architectural features have been preserved throughout the works. Its terracotta façade and Victorian detailing remain intact, while internal spaces have been reworked to introduce a more contemporary design language.
The refurbishment, which began in 2023, has focused on restoring key features including the entrance, staircase and barrel-vaulted ceilings. Updated interiors incorporate warmer tones, layered textures and revised lighting schemes to create a more cohesive and refined environment.
Guest rooms and suites have also been redesigned, with layouts shaped by the building’s original structure. The approach balances the preservation of historic elements with the introduction of modern finishes and comforts.
Launch Of Gott’s Bar & Kitchen
As part of the repositioning, the hotel has introduced Gott’s Bar & Kitchen, a new restaurant and bar concept intended to broaden its appeal to both guests and local audiences.
The dining offer focuses on regionally influenced dishes using locally sourced ingredients. Menu items include The Met Steak & Onion Pie, grilled salmon with seaweed beurre blanc and Korean miso cauliflower.
The space has been designed to reflect the wider refurbishment, combining contemporary detailing with references to the building’s original character. Its positioning within the hotel signals a shift towards a more integrated food and beverage offer.
Revitalised Event Spaces
The refurbishment also extends to the hotel’s meetings and events facilities. Nine spaces, including the ballroom, have been updated to support a range of uses from corporate functions to private events.
While retaining period features, the rooms have been upgraded with modern infrastructure to improve flexibility and usability.
Sustainability considerations have been incorporated throughout the project, including the use of locally sourced materials and recycled or repurposed finishes.
Positioning Within The City
Located on King Street, close to Leeds railway station and the city centre, the hotel continues to operate as a combined business and leisure destination.
“The Met Hotel Leeds has always been a special place for the city – a meeting point, a celebration space, and a landmark in its own right. Our vision was to honour its legacy while creating something truly inspiring for today’s guests. The result is a hotel that feels timeless yet completely renewed and a place where history meets modern hospitality.”
Mike Liddle, General Manager, The Met Hotel Leeds
The refurbishment represents a continuation of the building’s long-standing role within Leeds, aligning its architectural identity with updated operational and design standards.
