Cornwall has been ranked the number one destination for slow travel, according to new research conducted by Sainsbury’s Bank. The Slow Travel Index evaluated 30 popular global locations using several criteria including accommodation, travel costs, access to nature, cuisine, and opportunities for relaxation.
Cornwall secured the top spot, ahead of other notable destinations such as the Algarve, Provence, Lanzarote and Oslo.

“When creating our index, Cornwall’s stunning coastline, hidden gems and rich history that encourage travellers to slow down really helped secure its top position,” said Stuart Briant, Head of Travel Money. “It offers visitors ample opportunities for relaxation and exploration at their own pace.”
The top five slow travel destinations highlighted in the index are:
- Cornwall, UK
- The Algarve, Portugal
- Provence, France
- Lanzarote, Spain
- Oslo, Norway
The concept of slow travel has been growing in popularity, with UK web searches for the term rising by 5.4% year on year, increasing from 4,370 between April 2023 and March 2024 to 4,608 in the same period from 2024 to 2025. The trend reflects a shift in travel priorities, favouring slower, more immersive experiences over rapid, itinerary-heavy holidays.
“Wellness expert Eloise Skinner says: ‘Slow travel helps us to truly experience a place rather than rushing through it, allowing for a more restful and enriching journey. In a world where burnout is on the rise, this mindful approach to travel could be a game-changer for physical and emotional well-being.’”
She added: “Moving slowly can allow us to feel more rested and peaceful. Spending longer in one place helps us feel more grounded and present in the moment.”

The findings position Cornwall as a destination not just for scenic beauty and local history, but also for restorative travel. Its combination of dramatic coastlines, rural settings and strong sense of place continues to resonate with visitors seeking deeper connections with their environment.
Stuart Briant commented further: “It’s great to have a location so close to home recognised as a world-leading destination for slow travel. We encourage visitors to embrace the slower pace, and discover the hidden gems that make this region so special.”
