There’s nothing quite like escaping the city and winding your way along long forest roads to reach a place where the trees feel endless, the air feels fresh and family time feels effortless. That was our experience at Forest Holidays Delamere Forest, nestled deep within Cheshire’s lush woodland. We stayed in a three-bedroom pet-free Golden Oak cabin as a family of four, and returned home with a mix of cherished moments, new adventures and a real desire to return.

Arriving and First Impressions
The drive into Delamere Forest is a bit wild in the best possible way. A long, winding and sometimes slightly bumpy road leads you deeper into woodland until suddenly you’re surrounded by towering trees and the air smells of pine and moss. It felt like we were truly stepping away from everyday life and entering the heart of nature.
Check-in was warm and friendly, with helpful staff at the Forest Retreat — the on-site hub of activity where you’ll find the café, bar and a small essentials shop. It’s a great first stop after unpacking and sets the tone for what follows: relaxed, welcoming and well looked after.

The Cabin: Layout, Comfort and Features
Our Golden Oak cabin was spacious, stylish and thoughtfully designed. The layout worked perfectly for a family of four. There were three bedrooms, including two doubles and a twin room, which gave us plenty of space and flexibility. The cabin came with a private hot tub, which quickly became our early evening ritual. It was the perfect place to unwind and let the day’s adventures slowly fade into the background.
The modern kitchen was fully equipped with everything we needed, and the outdoor barbecue area made it easy to enjoy cooking and dining outside. Inside, the living area was cosy and inviting, an ideal spot for relaxing with a film or playing a few board games together after exploring the forest trails.
One of the loveliest surprises was the appearance of curious squirrels. They would visit the decking from time to time, often stopping just long enough to nibble on a few leftover crumbs before darting back into the trees. These quiet moments with nature made the forest feel very much alive and part of the experience.
On our first night, we ordered pizza directly through the cabin’s television. The food was delivered to our door hot and fresh, and as a family package, it offered excellent value. We have certainly paid more for much less in other places, and it was a welcome convenience that helped us settle in without any fuss.
Sitting in the hot tub, listening to the rustle of the trees above and looking up at the canopy reaching towards the sky was one of the most peaceful moments of the weekend. It was the kind of setting that made you feel present, grounded and grateful.

The Forest Retreat: Food, Drink and Family Touches
The Forest Retreat is a welcoming space for all ages. Whether you fancy a proper coffee, a pint of cold beer or a cocktail in the sunshine, it has you covered. There’s plenty of seating inside and out, and a laid-back atmosphere that makes it easy to stop in after a walk or bike ride.
The on-site shop sells essentials like bread, milk and snacks, a lifesaver when you’ve arrived with the bare minimum like we did.

Cycling the Forest Trails
We hired bikes for the duration of our stay and cannot recommend it enough. You can book directly at the Forest Retreat, and everything from helmets to bike locks is included. The forest has a mix of clearly marked trails, each designed for different ability levels – from smooth, family-friendly loops to more challenging paths that weave deeper through the trees.
Our kids loved the shorter, flatter trails, while we took turns tackling some of the more adventurous routes. The sense of freedom that came with riding straight from the cabin into the forest was fantastic. It gave us the flexibility to explore at our own pace, take in the scenery, and let the forest set the rhythm for the day.

Things to Do in and Around Delamere
If you want to venture beyond the site, Delamere Forest itself offers plenty to explore — from its serene lakes and nature trails to the scenic Sandstone Trail, ideal for walking enthusiasts. We spotted birds of prey, heard woodpeckers tapping in the distance, and enjoyed the kind of fresh air that only a real forest can offer.
Nearby, the historic city of Chester makes for a wonderful day trip with its Roman walls, riverside walks and brilliant range of shops and restaurants. For families, it’s a great fallback plan if the weather turns.
Extra Experiences and Activities
Beyond the everyday adventure, Forest Holidays also offers a range of additional experiences. You can join a quiz night, take part in forest ranger-led walks, or sign up for family activities that bring the natural surroundings to life. These little extras are part of what make the trip feel tailored and memorable. Some are an additional cost.
Final Thoughts
This wasn’t our first Forest Holidays break, and it won’t be our last. I’m a real fan of the concept, escaping the concrete jungle and reconnecting with nature, without sacrificing comfort or style. The cabins at Delamere are modern and well maintained, and the forest setting is as close to ‘getting away from it all’ as you can get without leaving the country.
Even though work doesn’t stop for me, the ability to sit outside at the table with my laptop and coffee brought a sense of solace. It was peaceful, grounding, and surprisingly productive, all while listening to the trees move in the breeze overhead. That’s a kind of escape I didn’t realise I needed.
