In Georgia’s serene Kakheti wine region, surrounded by vineyards and the soft rise of the Caucasus Mountains, lies Lopota Lake Resort & Spa – a 60-hectare, 311-room destination that, at its heart, remains a family story. As travellers increasingly seek authentic, people-driven experiences over cookie-cutter luxury, family-run resorts like Lopota are finding new resonance. This is not just a large-scale resort; it is a living legacy – one built with love, resilience, and a deep sense of place.
Founded in 2008 by the late Goga Maisuradze, Lopota began humbly – a seven-room hotel beside a quiet lake in the rural historic wine-region of Georgia, about two-hours drive from the capital. What seemed like an impossible dream at the time – to turn an overlooked corner of Kakheti into a destination – has since become one of Europe’s most compelling examples of independent resort expansion.

Goga’s hands touched every element of Lopota’s beginnings: from selecting the stones used to build its first structures to welcoming guests himself. His passion was rooted not just in hospitality, but in sharing the Georgian way of life.
Today, his legacy lives on through his wife Eka and daughters Ana and Elene Maisuradze, who have carried the resort forward with both vision and grace after his passing. The family remains deeply involved in daily operations, ensuring every guest still feels the spirit of Georgian hospitality that defined Lopota’s origins.

Elene and Ana work closely together to carry forward their father’s vision, each bringing complementary strengths to the resort’s growth. The sisters oversee the broader business and creative strategy – from design and events to brand evolution, leading on-the-ground operations, guiding Château Buera, the family’s winery, and shaping Lopota’s expanding wellness, culinary, and cultural experiences.
Together, they have not only safeguarded their father’s vision but elevated it, forming a dynamic partnership that continues to define the resort’s character and momentum, and bringing a new sense of innovation and international awareness while preserving the emotional core that sets Lopota apart. Their husbands, Sandro, who oversees the Château Buera winery, and Giorgi, who is the CEO of the company, also play active roles within the business, ensuring the next chapter of Lopota remains firmly family-driven.
Since Goga’s passing, many of his once-dreamt projects have been brought to life – including the sixteenth accommodation building, IKE, an Asian-inspired restaurant; a Jazz Club that celebrates Kakheti’s growing creative scene; and Green Aqua, the resort’s water park and recreation zone. Each addition reflects the family’s collective vision: to create a destination that blends authentic Georgian character with world-class experiences. Lopota’s current expansion also includes renovating existing accommodation buildings, enhancing wellness facilities, and introducing immersive cultural and culinary programmes.

Even as it expands, Lopota retains its original philosophy: that hospitality is about people first. From the warmth of a welcome glass of wine to the personal involvement of the Maisuradze family in daily life, guests continue to experience something increasingly rare – the sincerity of a place built and cared for by its owners. The family partners with locally based design and architecture studios for all expansion projects, including Studio Gypsy and Concrete, led by designer Lado Lomitashvili, 10:10 Interiors by Sandro Lominashvili and Nanka Dolidze, and David Koiava’s architectural firm Design Avenue Studio.
Lopota’s journey mirrors a broader trend across Europe: the growing value of independent, experience-led hospitality driven by personal stories and local connection, and located beyond traditional hotspots like the Mediterranean coast or the Alps. As large-scale resort groups chase lifestyle branding, Lopota demonstrates that scale and soul can coexist – that a resort can grow without losing its humanity, offering an answer for travellers interested in destinations that blend outdoor adventure, wellbeing, and authenticity – a shift accelerated by changing post-pandemic priorities.

For Ana and Elene, the mission is clear: to carry forward their father’s ethos of care, community, and creativity, while introducing a new generation of travellers to Georgia’s rich hospitality culture.
“This place has always been about family – not just ours, but the families who visit and return,” says Elene. “Every building, every tree, carries part of our story. Our goal is to keep growing without ever forgetting where it all began.”
“Travellers want stories, not just stays,” adds Ana Masiuradze. “They’re choosing destinations that feel real – where the experience is rooted in the environment and local life.”
Lopota Lake Resort & Spa stands today not only as a destination but as a living tribute – to a father’s dream, a family’s resilience, and a region quietly stepping into the global spotlight.
