A new café-bar concept, The Village Tree, is set to open in Canada Water, envisioned as a central community space within the district’s broader regeneration. The design, developed to reflect themes of connection and sustainability, aims to become a welcoming hub at the heart of a transforming neighbourhood.

The Village Tree has been designed with the idea of fostering local engagement, drawing on the symbolism of trees as communal landmarks. The interiors feature an unconventional take on organic design elements, most notably a custom LED neon noodle light that stretches across the ceiling like a branching canopy. The lighting installation, combined with layered textures and ambient tones, is intended to create a warm, intimate setting.

“We are thrilled to contribute to the transformation of Canada Water with a space that prioritises community and sustainability,” said Leanne Armstrong, Founder of Black Ivy Design, the studio behind the concept. “Our design of The Village Tree reflects this ethos, bringing warmth and vibrancy to the heart of an exciting new development.”

The space incorporates materials and finishes that align with sustainable values. Earthy terrazzo and acoustic panels have been selected to complement the existing industrial framework of the building, while colour choices such as terracotta and mustard contribute to the calm, grounded atmosphere. Lighting features include paper lanterns and rattan fixtures, adding further warmth. Cosy built-in booths and private seating areas offer flexibility for both quiet moments and social gatherings.

The Village Tree’s opening will support the vision of the Canada Water Masterplan, a large-scale regeneration strategy that integrates the area’s history, natural landscape and community infrastructure. Positioned to reflect the biodiversity of nearby Canada Dock and the surrounding woodlands, the café-bar is intended to be both a social and environmental asset.

“Working with Black Ivy Design has been a truly collaborative and inspiring process,” said Matt Llyod, Director, The Village Tree. “Leanne’s vision perfectly captured what we imagined – a warm, welcoming space that feels rooted in the community. The design reflects our values of connection, sustainability and creativity. We can’t wait to open our doors and become part of everyday life in Canada Water.”

The Village Tree will be part of a wider regeneration initiative that includes one million square feet of restaurants, cultural venues, and leisure offerings, alongside the delivery of 3,000 new homes and 35 per cent dedicated open space. The development places emphasis on accessible, inclusive public environments that encourage interaction, making The Village Tree a fitting addition to the evolving area.
