Our recent trip to Amsterdam, a city that masterfully blends rich history with modern vibrancy, was nothing short of enchanting. From the moment we touched down at Schiphol Airport after an early 6:00 AM flight from Luton with EasyJet, we knew we were in for a unique experience. The journey began with the usual hustle at Luton Airport, where organised chaos reigned as we navigated bag drop and security. However, upon arriving in Amsterdam, it was a different story altogether. Schiphol Airport was impressively organised. Despite a long taxi to our gate, we quickly found ourselves on the train to Amsterdam Central Station, ready to dive into the city’s wonders.

Amsterdam, known for its iconic canals, picturesque architecture, and vibrant cultural scene, offers something for every traveller. The city’s historical roots run deep, from its days as a major trading port in the 17th century, through its artistic golden age when Rembrandt and Vermeer were capturing the world on canvas, to its current status as a thriving hub of art, culture, and liberal thinking. Walking the streets of Amsterdam, you can feel this history blend seamlessly with the modern world – a testament to the city’s enduring charm.

NH Collection Amsterdam Barbizon Palace: A Royal Stay with a Few Quirks

Our home for two nights was the NH Collection Amsterdam Barbizon Palace, a 5-star hotel that promises an experience of luxury and comfort. The hotel is conveniently located in the heart of the city, directly opposite the stunning Central Station, offering an ideal base for exploring Amsterdam.

Upon arrival, we were immediately impressed by the grandeur of the hotel’s reception area. The high ceilings, elegant décor, and welcoming atmosphere set the tone for what we hoped would be a memorable stay. The service from the moment we walked in was exceptional – the front desk staff were friendly and efficient, ensuring a smooth check-in, and throughout our stay, the attention to detail from the cleaners to the concierge was impeccable.

We stayed in Room 209 on the second floor, a superior room with a view that overlooked Central Station. The sight of the station’s beautiful façade, especially at night when it’s all lit up, was truly captivating. However, while the room was comfortable and well-appointed, it didn’t quite meet the expectations of a top-end 5-star experience. The décor, though tasteful, felt a bit dated, and the hallways leading to the rooms seemed in need of a refresh. That said, considering the price point, it was still a good value for the quality of service and the unbeatable location.

Exploring Amsterdam: Beyond the Beaten Path

Amsterdam is a city best explored on foot, and one of the joys of wandering its streets is discovering the unexpected beauty tucked away from the main thoroughfares. While the bustling streets around Dam Square and the Royal Palace are worth seeing, we found that the true charm of the city lies in its quieter backstreets. Take a sharp turn off the main roads, and you’ll find yourself in serene neighbourhoods lined with historic townhouses and crisscrossed by tranquil canals. These areas are picture-perfect, especially in the early morning light or just as the sun sets, casting a golden hue over the water.

One of the significant historical landmarks we were determined to see was the Anne Frank House. Unfortunately, due to our last-minute planning, we missed out on securing tickets to tour the interior. However, we made it a point to visit the building from the outside, taking a moment to reflect on its profound historical significance. Standing before the house where Anne Frank wrote her diary, it was impossible not to feel a deep connection to the past. The Anne Frank House is more than just a museum; it’s a place of remembrance and reflection, and even a glimpse from the outside is a powerful experience.

Amsterdam’s Coffee Shops: A Unique Cultural Experience

Amsterdam’s coffee shop culture is another iconic aspect of the city, though it’s essential to know the difference between a café and a coffee shop. While a café will serve you a traditional cup of coffee, a coffee shop often offers a very different experience, where you can legally purchase and consume cannabis. The first thing you’ll notice as you approach these establishments is the unmistakable scent of Amsterdam’s “perfume” wafting through the air.

The more famous names like The Bulldog can be found along the main strips, drawing in a mix of tourists and locals alike. However, venturing into the less touristy areas can lead you to smaller, more intimate coffee shops, each offering a different vibe. These venues cater to both new and experienced users, and the staff are generally well-trained and knowledgeable, ready to guide you towards the right product for the experience you’re seeking. It’s also worth noting that Amsterdam has a ban on smoking tobacco inside coffee shops, so what you’ll be smoking is purely cannabis or herbal mixes.

Red Light District: An Integral Part of Amsterdam’s Identity

Of course, no visit to Amsterdam would be complete without a stroll through the Red Light District. Despite its controversial reputation, this area is a vibrant part of the city’s culture and history. It feels surprisingly safe and welcoming, with a mix of curious tourists, couples, and even families exploring the streets. The district’s history is fascinating, dating back to the 14th century when sailors arrived in the city and helped establish what has become one of the world’s most famous neighbourhoods. While the future of the Red Light District is uncertain, with talks of relocating it out of the city centre, it remains a must-see for now – a place where Amsterdam’s liberal spirit is on full display.

Canal Tour with Captain Jack

One of the highlights of our visit was a canal tour with Captain Jack, renowned for providing an intimate look at Amsterdam from its most iconic vantage point – the water. Though the company bears the name “Captain Jack,” it wasn’t the titular Jack himself who guided us. Instead, we had a fantastic guide who was every bit as engaging and knowledgeable. Gliding along the canals with a glass of wine in hand, our guide filled us in on the city’s history, architecture, and lesser-known facts, all while pointing out the unique homes and bridges that line the waterways. The sunshine, gentle breeze, and peaceful canal life made this an unforgettable part of our trip.

A Culinary Journey in Amsterdam: From Pancakes to Divine Dining

Amsterdam’s food scene is as diverse and exciting as the city itself, and our culinary adventures were nothing short of spectacular. One of the first stops on our gastronomic journey was at Pancakes.Amsterdam, a popular spot that is well worth the wait. Here, we indulged in raspberry-loaded waffles and the most amazing pancakes we’ve ever had. The restaurant is often crowded, but the experience of tasting authentic Dutch pancakes in such a lively setting makes it a must-visit for any food lover.

On our second night, we experienced something truly extraordinary at Bellezza Divine Dining. This restaurant offers more than just a meal – it’s a journey through culinary art and storytelling. The experience is carefully curated, with each dish and drink pairing telling a unique story, expertly explained by the hosts. We opted for the mocktail and wine pairing, which complemented each course beautifully. The food was out of this world, with every dish surpassing the last in creativity and flavour.

Bellezza’s concept changes every three months, ensuring that each visit is a new adventure. The experience culminates in a final course known as “Heaven,” a fitting end to the gastronomic journey. Our group consisted of nine people, but sometimes the experience can include a few more guests. It’s not a budget-friendly option, but it’s worth every penny for the quality of food, service, and the unforgettable experience it provides. If you’re in Amsterdam and looking to treat yourself, Bellezza Divine Dining is an absolute must.

Lost in Amsterdam: A Quirky, Unmissable Bar

One evening, we stumbled upon Lost in Amsterdam. Located near the city centre, this quirky lounge café and cocktail bar is a favourite among both locals and tourists alike, and it’s easy to see why. The atmosphere is eclectic and welcoming, with a cosy, almost homely feel enhanced by soft lighting, colourful candles, and organic wool carpets on every seat. The décor is as unique as it gets, featuring handmade pumpkin lamps and wooden accents that add to its charm.

The cocktail menu here is extensive, boasting over 60 options, including their famous alcoholic shakes. Each drink is carefully crafted by skilled bartenders, ensuring that every sip is as delightful as the last. What sets Lost in Amsterdam apart is its laid-back vibe where you can enjoy a drink, a smoke (if you choose), and the company of a mixed, international clientele. The bar’s commitment to quality extends beyond just drinks; they’re also eco-conscious, using biodegradable straws and organic materials wherever possible.

Rooftop Relaxation at LuminAir

After a day filled with exploration, there’s no better way to unwind than at a rooftop bar, and the one atop the DoubleTree by Hilton, LuminAir, did not disappoint. This spot offers a stunning panoramic view of Amsterdam, making it the perfect place to watch the sun dip below the horizon. As the sky turns shades of orange and pink, a DJ plays chill tunes in the background, adding to the relaxed yet vibrant atmosphere. It’s a fantastic way to end an evening in the city, with a cocktail in hand, soaking in the last rays of the day.

Practical Tips: Navigating Amsterdam and Budget Considerations

Amsterdam is not a cheap city, especially when it comes to accommodation. In fact, it ranks as one of the most expensive cities in Europe in terms of average hotel prices. However, the experience you get in return – the history, culture, and unique charm – makes it well worth the investment.

Getting to and from the airport couldn’t be easier. The train ride from Schiphol to Amsterdam Central Station is straightforward; simply press the button on the ticket machine that says “Go to Amsterdam” or “Go to Airport” on the front screen. A top tip for travellers during rush hour: upgrade to first class. It’s a bit more expensive, but you’ll appreciate the extra space and comfort. During quieter times, economy class is perfectly fine, but for a few extra Euros, the upgrade can make your journey that much more pleasant.

Final Thoughts

Our two nights in Amsterdam offered a perfect blend of culture, history, and modern luxury. The NH Collection Amsterdam Barbizon Palace provided a comfortable base from which to explore. The city itself, with its endless canals, hidden gems, and vibrant energy, left us eager to return. Whether you’re wandering the backstreets, cruising the canals, or indulging in the city’s culinary delights, Amsterdam is a place that stays with you long after you’ve left.

Top 5 Travel Tips for Visiting Amsterdam

  1. Plan Ahead for Popular Attractions: Amsterdam’s top sights, like the Anne Frank House, often sell out well in advance. If your trip is last minute, be sure to check ticket availability early or at least visit the exterior to appreciate the site’s historical significance.
  2. Explore Beyond the Main Streets: While the popular areas like Dam Square are bustling with activity, some of Amsterdam’s most charming spots are found by taking a detour into quieter, less-travelled backstreets. Here, you’ll discover picturesque canals, quaint houses, and a peaceful atmosphere that’s perfect for a more intimate exploration of the city.
  3. Indulge in Amsterdam’s Culinary Scene: Make sure to experience local dining spots like Pancakes.Amsterdam, where the raspberry-loaded waffles and traditional Dutch pancakes are worth the wait. For a unique, upscale dining experience, try Bellezza Divine Dining, where each dish and drink pairing tells a story, and the culinary journey ends with a course called “Heaven.”
  4. Take a Canal Tour: To truly appreciate Amsterdam’s beauty and history, a canal tour is a must. Companies like Captain Jack offer guided tours that provide insight into the city’s architecture and history while you relax on the water with a drink in hand. It’s a serene and informative way to see the city from a different perspective.
  5. Be Budget-Aware: Amsterdam is one of the most expensive cities in Europe, especially when it comes to accommodation and dining. Plan your budget carefully, and consider staying in less central locations to save on hotel costs. You can still enjoy the city’s highlights, but being mindful of expenses will help you make the most of your trip without breaking the bank.
