London’s dining scene welcomes a new addition with the opening of Shakara, a modern West African restaurant and cocktail bar located on Baker Street, Marylebone. Officially opening its doors on 31st January 2025, Shakara promises an immersive experience that combines authentic West African flavours, live entertainment, and fine mixology.

Designed by award-winning architect Red Deer and interior design agency Tola Ojuolape Studio, Shakara’s 6,000 sq ft space is inspired by the vibrant cultural and natural elements of West Africa. Terracotta tiles evoke Nigeria’s red soil, while abstract artworks from Red Door Gallery celebrate African contemporary art. Every detail, from the logo’s nod to the talking drum to the earthy colour palette, reflects Shakara’s mission to honour African heritage while embracing a sophisticated global outlook.

At the helm of the kitchen is Head Chef Victor Okunowo, previously of Talking Drum and a Semi-Finalist of BBC MasterChef: The Professionals 2020. He is joined by Consultant Executive Chef Ayo Adeyemi, formerly of Michelin-starred Akoko. Together, they have crafted a menu that reinterprets traditional dishes from Nigeria, Ghana, and The Gambia with a contemporary twist. Guests can expect innovative creations made with the finest ingredients, delivering an exceptional take on West African cuisine.

Founder Jolly Cole shared his vision for the restaurant:
“Shakara was born from a simple concept – to export the African palette to the world whilst maintaining international standards. Our aim is to simultaneously entice the five senses – taste, sound, smell, sight, and touch – to provide our guests with the most memorable experience. Shakara offers a twist on contemporary dining, with carefully curated ingredients, ambience, and entertainment from Afro culture.”

Set across two levels, Shakara offers a range of dining experiences. The ground floor houses the main restaurant, cocktail bar, and stage, while the lower level features two private dining rooms. The larger private space accommodates 110 standing guests, while the smaller can host 30 seated or 40 standing. The ground floor has a capacity of 76 covers, and the lower level adds 21 more.

Live performances and resident DJs enhance the late-night dining atmosphere, blending Afrohouse, Afrobeats, R&B, and house music to create an electric ambience. The restaurant’s aim is to provide more than just a meal—Shakara invites guests into a sensory celebration of African culture and hospitality.

Shakara’s hours are designed to cater to both weekday dinners and weekend lunch and dinner services, opening Monday to Friday from 5 pm to midnight, and offering lunch on Saturday and Sunday from 12 pm to 3 pm, followed by dinner from 6 pm to midnight.
