Printworks, Manchester’s iconic leisure and dining destination, has unveiled an innovative addition to its £27 million refurbishment with its first-ever celebrity live-stream event. The activation, which featured British TV personality Charlotte Dawson, took place using Europe’s largest digital ceiling and advanced interactive screens, further cementing the venue’s position as a leader in immersive entertainment.
The event, designed to uplift spirits on what is often called the “most depressing day of the year,” was centred around a state-of-the-art e-gaming screen. Charlotte Dawson interacted directly with visitors during the live stream, creating an engaging and immersive experience that delighted attendees. This digital activation aimed to spread positivity while showcasing the technological capabilities of the newly refurbished venue.
A key component of the event was the use of the Black Magic Atem Extreme media switcher. Employing its advanced chromakey technology, the system seamlessly integrated Charlotte Dawson into the live broadcast, delivering high-quality visuals and an interactive atmosphere. This sophisticated media solution highlighted Printworks’ commitment to digital innovation and its ability to redefine interactive media experiences in a leisure setting.
In addition to the live-stream activation, visitors were treated to a vibrant display of rainbow-coloured dancing umbrellas on the venue’s expansive 1,000-square-metre digital ceiling. These mood-boosting animations added energy and excitement to the space, demonstrating the versatility of the advanced digital infrastructure. By combining cutting-edge technology with creative content, Printworks continues to push the boundaries of immersive entertainment.
Originally a printing facility in the late 1800s, Printworks has undergone a dramatic transformation to become one of the UK’s leading entertainment hubs. Its £27m refurbishment strikes a balance between preserving the venue’s historic architecture and introducing modern innovations, ensuring its relevance in today’s dynamic leisure market.
Dan Davis, Centre Manager at Printworks, commented on the milestone:
“2024 was a transformative year for Printworks, and we’re thrilled to kickstart 2025 with such an exciting and interactive activation. Our state-of-the-art screens have opened a world of creative possibilities, from dazzling displays like our Bonfire Night spectacular to the magical Christmas light switch-on. This unique live-stream event with Charlotte Dawson showcases the versatility of our offerings and reflects our commitment to creating unforgettable experiences.
“Printworks’ distinctive design and character make it one of a kind in the city. It offers a space where new and returning visitors can enjoy a blend of historical architecture and modern innovation, creating opportunities to attract and engage audiences through creative experiences as they visit our tenants. Our aim is to make Printworks a must-visit destination, not just for locals but for visitors from across the UK and beyond.”
The refurbished venue closed out 2024 with record-breaking footfall, reflecting its growing reputation as one of the UK’s premier destinations for dining, entertainment, and leisure. By embracing modern technology while honouring its historical roots, Printworks continues to position itself as a standout attraction in Manchester’s vibrant cityscape.
