DUKES London, a renowned five-star hotel in the heart of St James’s, Mayfair, has announced an extensive renovation project that will see the property undergo a significant transformation. The refurbishment began in January 2025, with the hotel temporarily closing its doors to accommodate the ambitious redesign, which is expected to be completed by late 2025.

During the renovation, the iconic DUKES Bar will remain open, continuing to welcome guests with its signature martinis, famously served from antique trolleys. The bar’s timeless appeal and quintessentially British atmosphere ensure it remains a key destination, even as the rest of the property undergoes its transformation.

The redesign is being led by celebrated interior designer Russell Sage, whose approach will balance modern sophistication with the classic elegance that has long defined DUKES London. In addition, the project involves collaboration with a historian to explore and celebrate the hotel’s rich heritage and its St James’s location. Insights from this research will be thoughtfully incorporated into the redesign, ensuring that the hotel’s legacy is honoured while introducing a refreshed aesthetic.

Michael Purtill, General Manager at DUKES London, shared his enthusiasm for the project:
“This is a momentous occasion for the hotel, and we’re thrilled to embark on a new chapter. For decades, our loyal guests have cherished the warmth, charm, and intimacy that define the DUKES experience. This refurbishment allows us to preserve those beloved elements while creating a space that feels elegant, inviting, and unforgettable. It’s our way of ensuring that DUKES London remains an icon of British hospitality.”

DUKES London, situated in one of London’s most prestigious areas, has long been a retreat for royalty, writers, musicians, and politicians. Its St James’s location, steeped in history dating back to the 16th-century palace of King Henry VIII, offers a fitting backdrop for the hotel’s evolution.

The renovation promises to uphold the hotel’s storied past while introducing design elements that cater to the modern traveller. Details of the redesign will be revealed over the coming months, with the project set to be completed by late 2025.
