In the heart of York, a new culinary star is rising. The Asian-Mediterranean fusion restaurant, 1711, housed within the historic and luxurious confines of the Judge’s Lodging hotel, has been awarded two prestigious AA Rosettes. This recognition comes just five months after the restaurant opened its doors to the public, marking a significant milestone in its nascent journey.
1711’s kitchen is helmed by the talented Philippine-born Head Chef, Marlon Sanchez, whose impressive résumé includes a stint at the Michelin-starred The Black Swan at Oldstead, under the tutelage of celebrated chef Tommy Banks. Chef Sanchez’s classical training at the Culinary Institute of Barcelona is evident in the restaurant’s offerings, which blend modern culinary techniques with the rich tapestry of Asian flavours and Mediterranean zest.
The AA Rosette award, a long-established hallmark of cooking excellence, is not bestowed lightly. It requires a rigorous inspection by AA experts, who evaluate not just the cuisine but also the service, attention to detail, and overall dining experience. 1711 has been lauded for its ‘interesting new concept,’ with the AA inspection report highlighting the menu’s reflection of ‘Marlon’s identity and ethos well.’ The precision in preparation and the selection of quality ingredients have been particularly praised.
The service at 1711 has not gone unnoticed. The AA report commends the ‘very good service standards across the board,’ noting the staff’s proactive and attentive nature. There is a palpable sense of anticipation for the evolution of Chef Marlon’s cuisine and the 1711 concept.
1711’s sister establishment, the Cellar Bar, also within The Judge’s Lodging, retains its one Rosette, serving classic pub dishes with a fresh, seasonal twist.
Commenting on the achievement, Chef Marlon Sanchez said: “York’s food scene is constantly evolving and 1711 delivers a unique food offering by blending ingredients from Yorkshire to Asia to create the rich fusion cuisine that I am so passionate about.
“The entire kitchen and front of house teams have worked exceptionally hard for this accolade so we’re extremely thankful for the recognition, especially so soon after 1711’s opening just five months ago.”
Nik Haywood, General Manager at The Judge’s Lodging, added: “This is a fantastic achievement and is testament to the team’s commitment to producing exceptional food for our guests, alongside authentic Yorkshire hospitality. We’re excited to see what the future holds and will continue to focus on creating a unique and memorable experience which keeps guests coming back time and time again.”
1711, with its prime location in York, is open for lunch and dinner from Wednesday to Saturday. The restaurant, which seats 42, also offers private event catering for groups of up to 12.
